Making it Harder for Tourist to get a Driver’s License
As of right now it is very easy for tourists to obtain a Costa Rican driver’s license, but that is about to change.Â
To get a license as a tourist all you need is a license from any country, a passport, and a health statement from a physician. The health statement can be effortlessly obtained as it requires one to answer a few questions in a matter of minutes and typically the physician is next door to the licensing center.Â
It is much harder for residents to get their licenses as they have to take a driving course and pass a proctored test.Â
The goal of the proposed change is to tie the issuance of a driver’s license to the immigration status of the applicant. They would allow visitor’s to drive with their own, non-Costa Rican license for up to 90 days and then once they have been approved for residency they can then apply for a license. Â
Carlos Avendaño Calvo, a former lawmaker, is the person behind the proposed legislation.Â
