A Safe Holiday Season is a Happy Holiday Season
Written by JohnD
Any international traveler knows that, in order to avoid being a victim of a crime, you have to be constantly vigilant. Traveling is rather like walking through New York’s Central Park at night; you must be aware of your surroundings. Costa Rica provides no exception to the rule. To this end, the Public Security Ministry, the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) and the Municipal Police will be beefing up security forces for this holiday season to ensure public safety and security. Extra members of the Public Police Force will be joined by OIJ agents, municipal police and private bank security to help ensure citizens a safe season. The patrols will include mounted police, motorized units and air support.
The measures, according to Public Security authorities are to allow people to relax and enjoy the season without fear of being victims of crime. Police cadets will also be on patrol during the season providing support to the regular units. All the police agencies, including the Police Intervention Unit (UIP), Canine Unit, Special Help Unit and the Tourist Police will have increased patrols.
However, despite the increase in security measures, it is still essential that travelers and citizens alike be careful and use common sense. Common sense includes behavior like not going out on the streets with large sums of cash. Don’t carry appealing, “snatchable” items, e.g. visible wallets, expensive cameras or purses. Do not talk to strangers and avoid walking alone in desolate areas. Always carry a copy of your passport (the copy should include the stamped page) as an ID and leave the original in a safe or safe place. Police officials also recommend not counting money in public and always have a companion while shopping or banking. Have a happy holiday season and good luck!
