First Heart Transplant in 8 years in Costa Rica
A 42 year old resident of the Province of Limon, became the first person to receive a heart transplant in the country since 1999. Previously, all transplants had been performed in the Hospital Mexico, however this was the first one done the Calderon Guardia hospital.
The recipient of the heart, Maria Angeles Castillo, had been suffering for cardiac problems which were augmented after the birth of her last child. The donor of the heart was a 19 year girl, of whom more details are not available. The operation was carried out last Thursday, and the patient has remained in the ICU since then.
Additionally, a new law has been passed in the country, where all people who get a new driving license (or renew it) will be asked if they wish to be listed as donors in case of death in a traffic accident. It is expected that the new feature will appear in driving licenses soon.
