A Costa Rican Love Affair ends in Hunger Strike
Jenny Torres married her cyberspace love after only meeting once. Although he is from Argentina and she lives here in Heredia, they have made it work, as they believe love conquers all. Well, apparently it does not conquer the immigration rules set by the Costa Rican government even though they are married.
Torres is on a nine day hunger strike in front of the Supreme Court Justice building in downtown San Jose. The reason her husband is not allowed to enter the country is because he did not have a round trip airplane ticket upon his arrival at Juan Santamaria International airport. She has stated that the ticket was a gift and she could not afford a full fare round trip ticket.
The immigration laws state that visitors must possess a roundtrip air ticket or at least prove they have sufficient funds to buy one. Her husband did not even step foot outside of the airport and was put back on an airplane within an hour.
She plans to continue her hunger strike until she has to go back to work next Wednesday. The Red Cross is carefully watching her as the temperature has dipped well below average.
