Costa Rica to Experience a Recount?

It is no surprise that the close outcome of the referendum has brought scrutiny from the No campaign.  The trade agreement with the US passed with 51.58% of the vote barely making it pass.

Campaigns against CAFTA have already contested the results.  They believe that the President violated the Costa Rican Electoral Code with the help of the media.  The code prohibits the distribution of any type of campaign materials for the two days prior to the referendum.  They believe that the President abused the media to get his message across.  Some anti-CAFTA also believe that the announcement that the US will not re-negotiate was a scare tactic used for people in a limbo situation to vote yes.

The public and many organizations are pushing for a recount with may start Tuesday.

  1. a recount is automatic, regardless. votes are first counted at the mesas, then sent to the TSE where they are handcounted again, 8am - 6pm, mon-fri, automatically, as part of the process. the recount is shown live on channel 16 for people with amnet cable.

  2. Please pray for and envision a reccount with the results coming out in favor of the opposition. The “free” trade agreement would be disastrous for the local people and the environment. The White House had no business threatening them HOURS before the vote. The US gov’t should leave Costa RIca alone.
    Keep Costa Rica RICA!
