Costa Rica Amusement Park Revamps Theme Area

When most people think of Costa Rica, a country full of natural adventure, a man-made amusement park does not often come to mind. The National Amusement Park, in La Uruca, Costa Rica, is trying to change that. One section of the park, the Pueblo Antiguo or “Old City”, which features culturally themed sights and activities, is presenting a new dinner show every Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 7p.m.

The Costa Rican Nights Tour costs $45 with transportation and $38 without, and features a show that involves a mixture of Costa Rican music, culture and dance, from the 19th century until the present day. The show features a large variety of music from folk music to cumbia to marimba. The price also includes a welcome cocktail, a traditional buffet dinner, a firework show, and a guided tour through Pueblo Antiguo.

By revamping the show and offering bilingual tours, the park hopes to attract more tourists and Costa Ricans alike to the park to enjoy this cultural experience. The Old City has many replicas of architecture from the early 19th century, as well as demonstrations of activities and cooking from that era that are all open during the day starting at 9 a.m.

While the National Amusement Park was created in 1981 in association with the National Hospital for Children, the Old City was created as an addition in 1994 as a cultural theme park inside the Amusement park, to teach tourists and Costa Ricans alike about their culture and history. The Old City has a charming atmosphere that has made it a popular birthday and wedding venue for Costa Ricans.
