What´s Next for Costa Rica…Peace from both sides
Yesterday President Oscar Arias and members of the PAC, met for the first time since the TLC was passed. The PAC was heavily opposed to the treaty but was willing to meet with the President to discuss the future of Costa Rica.
The meeting was initiated by the president as somewhat of a peace offering. Both sides have their opinions but were willing to share and listen to the others in a controlled setting.
The outcome of the meeting was that the PAC will not complicate the governmental process of approving the new laws for the TLC, which need to be implemented by March 1st.
The parties couldn’t be more like oil and water. The President and his government were very pro-TLC, while the head of the PAC, Otton Solis, headed the No campaign. In addition, both of the men ran against each other in the past presidential election. But Solis did not attend the meeting as he was not invited. Instead it was two representatives from the PAC, one being Elizabeth Fonseca the head of the group.
Fonseca stated that she and the group will not interrupt the process but she can not be asked to vote for anything she does not believe in.
