China Offers Costa Rica $50 million
President Oscar Arias announced this week that the Chinese government is offering money to the Costa Rican government to aid projects such as schools, roadwork, and other public works.
For 63 years Costa Rica and Taiwan shared a diplomatic relationship that yielded the country millions of dollars in aids and loans. Recently Costa Rica ended the long run relationship to buddy up with China, a much more powerful country.
It is still unclear on both ends if the money is a donation or a loan. In addition the amount is still up in the air but it has been discussed at this amount for quite awhile. It almost seems as though both sides are not on the same parallel as one thinks it will be donated and the other is completely uncertain. The head of China’s Central Bank will be visiting Costa Rica next month to discuss all of the details and get everyone on the same page.
This is very exciting for Costa Rica. Now the country is ¨in bed¨ with one of the largest and most powerful countries in the world; opening trade opportunities and financial assistance.
