San Jose Costa Rica Anti-TLC Protest

On Sunday over 100,000 protesters gathered in downtown San Jose, to protest the Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC), the free trade deal with the United States.  With just under a week now until the referendum (October 7th), thousands gathered to have their voice heard.

With a country of only 4 million people this was a huge demonstration.  Many dressed in skeletons or as President Bush and shouted against the TLC.  The general consensuses of those that are opposed believe Costa Ricans will lose their jobs and the country would be flooded with cheap farm goods.   Many believe that Costa Rica should have some accord with the states but does not want to ¨sell¨ the country.

The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) also includes Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.  Costa Rica is the only country who has yet to ratify the agreement and is the only country to hold a referendum.

The country is almost split right down the center on the issue.  The pro side of the debate says that TLC will bring investment and jobs.

  1. “Over 100,000 protesters gathered in downtown San Jose, to protest the Tratdao de Libre Comercio (TLC)”

You said it: protest the Tratdao de Libre Comercio (TLC).

Well, the right way to say it should be “TRATADO”. But never mind.

    Now…

“The ironic thing about the protest on Sunday was once it was all finished hundreds of citizens flooded the fast food restaurants for a meal, all of which are American.”

    So the question is?

    Who is protesting against Americans??

    Don’t confuse things….

  2. Is it ironic too that a lot of people were drinking coke or wearing Levi’s jeans or Nike shoes? C’mon that’s not ironic. Nobody dislikes American food nor products, a lot of them are manufactured in Costa Rica as a matter of fact and restaurants are franchises operated an owned by locals. No one is asking BK or MCD to leave. That last paragraph it’s just a dum remark.

  3. Good point. It always helps seeing other peoples point of view to see the different dimensions and to become more knowledgable on the subject.
