New Luxury Costa Rica Hotels in the Works

Three luxury hotels are currently underway or in the planning stages in the northwest region of Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Costa Rica business News — New Guanacaste Hotels

Construction is already in progress for the new Costa Rica hotel Hilton Garden Inn Liberia Airport, which will be located in the residential and commercial complex Solarium near Liberia’s Daniel Oduber International Airport. It is predicted that the 169 room hotel set on 2 hectares of land will be open for business by Nov. 2008. The Liberia International Airport is the major jumping off point for tourists traveling to the beaches of Guanacaste and has seen a 16.3 percent increase in tourist traffic so far this year.

The Marriott hotel chain has also begun construction of its fourth property in Costa Rica, the JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa, set within Hacienda Pinilla in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste. They expect to begin operation of the 310-room resort in Sept. 2008. The hotel will include a 2,300 meter squared pool, a spa, four restaurants, two bars, and will employ 600 people.

Grupo Inmobiliaria Genesis, the developer of the Forum business park, is currently in the designing stage for a new hotel which will be part of the U.S. hotel chain Luxury Collection. The hotel will be located on part of the land concession controlled by Ecodesarrollo Papagayo to share the beautiful landscapes currently enjoyed by the Four Seasons Costa Rica resort and the Occidental Allegro Papagayo.

Ecodesarrollo Papagayo has also begun moving land for the Marina Papagayo. The Marina, which is expected to cost between $12 million and $15 million, will take up almost 450,000 square meters in the marine zone. The first stage, which should be ready in 2009, will include 179 boat docking areas, and a commercial zone of 1500 meters squared. It will also include government and administrative offices for immigration, customs and security, restaurants, parking, water treatment facilities and green zones.

As these works continue to advance, there has been no word as to why the Hyatt Regency Azulera & Spa that was going to be constructed in Brasilito, Santa Cruz, was never started. The Global Financial Group originally planned to invest $300 million in the project that was to commence in July 2006.

  1. All I have to say is that Costa Rica is definitely becoming a top destination for its beaches, rain forests and its people. Even celebrities go to Costa Rica this days.

  2. Optimism is a very good thing. But successful businessmen also are cautious, if they want to survivive. Global Financial Group pulled back for a reason - what was it?

Our Marina Management company, SANCTUARY MARINAS INTERNATIONAL, has been thriving because it has been optomistic while being cautious.

There’s a reason why the fastest-growing marina management company out of the United States has been slow to jump into Costa Rica. After the others jump and die, Sanctuary Marinas International will be managing the choicest marinas and resorts. Just watch and see…

The early bird gets the worm…. and is eaten by it.

  3. Stan,

Marinas are known for bringing pollution and ecological degradation to the areas where they operate. Costa Rica is perhaps not the marina hotspot because it has some level of ecological protection legislation that make the huge Mexico-style marinas, an impossibility here.

There is a huge difference between tourism in Costa Rica, and tourism in most of the Caribbean and Mexico. The industry here is integrally related to the community and economy, where the top hotels are boutique, eco-friendly, and well managed. Just compare the best hotels in Manuel Antonio, with those in Mexico. I would say that the view of an undeveloped bay from La Mariposa Hotel, hands down beats the view from the 50th floor of any high rise in Cancun.

Your pessimism is unfounded and biased to an industry for which I frankly care none for.
